The Goan Plan: Will TMC’s hard work provide results?

Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee has set her eyes on the BJP ruled state of Goa and is campaigning fiercely to win the 2022 elections

As the year comes to an end, so does the reign of the ruling party in Goa. As the 2022 elections dawns on the state in February, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress are fighting to gain power in this region. TMC is putting in full efforts to get a taste of victory. Will their wish be granted or will they fall short of the ruling BJP?

TMC, for the first time, has decided to contest outside West Bengal. According to them, Congress is not strong enough to withstand the power of the BJP. Only Mamta Banerjee has the power to oppose the Modi-led party. BJP on the other hand does not look at Trinamool as a threat but still holds Congress as their competition.

In order to gain the title of ‘All India Party’ and show that TMC, a regional party, is nothing less than a national party, Mamata Banerjee is going to contest against BJP in states where the BJP is in power.

Mamata x Goa = ? What’s the connection?

Planning to give a tough fight to the BJP, TMC has decided to make its presence known by taking control of the smaller states. Goa, having only 40 assembly seats, is the ideal place for them to make a mark. TMC is all set to contest in the February Goa election. The campaign for the 2022 poll is titled ‘Goenchi Navi Sakal’ (Goa’s New Dawn). TMC also managed to rope in the Former Chief Minister of Goa, Luizinho Faleiro. This move not only gives them a fair understanding of the state but a deeper understanding of the people.

Although Goa is a BJP ruled state, TMC is putting up a fierce battle this year. The master plan of the party is to slowly invade BJP ruled states and strip them of their power. The presence of strong leaders such as Derek O’Brien, Babul Supriyo and Sougata Roy have shown the strength of Trinamool. Mamata Banerjee hopes to win at least 4-6 seats in the assembly in order to have a say in the formation of the next government.

As BJP, Congress and TMC go head-to-head trying to impact the people of Goa through their campaigning, the only factor that matters at this stage is their strategy. Mamata Banerjee is trying to strike a chord with the people of Goa by meeting top leaders, holding public meetings and rolling out a massive advertising campaign with posters in every nook and corner of the city. In her fight to gain power over the state, Mamata has visited Goa twice in a single month. As part of their strategy, TMC Goa has announced the ‘Griha Laxmi Scheme’ where the female head of every household will get Rs 5000 every month, through online bank transfer. This scheme will ideally benefit 3.5 lakh families in Goa. According to TMC, the scheme will cost the government Rs 1500 to 2000 crore which is 6 to 8% of the Budget.

Just as Modi was the face of the 2014 elections, Prasanth Kishore is the mastermind political strategist preparing West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to become the face of the 2022 Goa elections.

Meanwhile, Congress seems to be falling behind with their leaders switching parties. TMC, one of the allies of the Congress, is now working against it. TMC has claimed that some congress members would be joining Trinamool very soon. Now congress has its doubts about whether Mamata is trying to defeat BJP or weaken the congress.

Though TMC has made its mark in Goa, the people do not want an outsider ruling their state. “Mamata didi is everywhere in the city on posters, banners, etc. but there are no units at the village and smaller levels. Moreover, many people consider it as an outsider party from Bengal and we would want to vote for our leaders. Moreover, every party is engaged in buying votes, and leaders and people would prefer choosing a stable party. We have seen in the past parties having 1-2 MLAs switching to the ruling front,” Prateek Satardekar, a shop owner in Nalgonda in Panaji told The New Indian Express.
