The Tamil remake of the Telugu blockbuster, Arjun Reddy, hit the screens today. Adithya Varma, as it is titled, has Dhruv Vikram and Banita Sandhu playing the lead roles.

Directed by Gireesaya, who earlier worked as an assistant director in Arjun Reddy, and produced by E4 Entertainment, the film’s release was highly anticipated by the audience and the critics alike, for all the controversies that Arjun Reddy and its Hindi remake Kabir Singh ran into.

Even Adithya Varma ran into major hassles during the pre-production. The film was supposed to be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Bala, under the title Varma. After a preliminary screening of Varma, it underwent a director change and a change in the female lead, and the film had to be shot again.

Adithya Varma’s music has been composed by Radhan, who had earlier composed music for both the previous versions.

While both Arjun Reddy (which starred Vijay Devarakonda and Shalini Pandey) and Kabir Singh (which had Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani) was critically acclaimed for the performance of the actors, all eyes are on the lead actors of Adithya Varma. While this is the debut movie for Dhruv Vikram, this is the second mainstream film for Banita Sandhu, who had earlier starred in Shoojit Sircar’s 2018 drama, October.

Both Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh gained mixed reviews, as most critics felt that the film portrayed toxic masculinity and had a chauvinistic male protagonist. This has furthermore increased the anticipation among the audience and the critics, who have been awaiting to see if Gireesaya’s take on the story underwent any changes to appease the critics. Banita Sandhu, in an interview with Film Companion, said, “I am not dismissing the fact they ( Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh) were problematic films. But such relationships do exist in society. Our version, Adithya Varma, is certainly better than the previous ones.”

While the earlier reviews of the film are out, the debutant Dhruv Vikram has been receiving his share of the limelight. It is to be noted that Dhruv Vikram is the son of a famous Tamil actor, Vikram, who has a massive fan base down south. Earlier updates from social media suggests that the film has had an explosive opening, with both fans of the Telugu movie and fans of Vikram flocking in the theaters.

K.D Engira Karuppu Durai, Frozen 2, and Pagalpanti are some of the other films that have been released this weekend.
