Actor-turned-Politician Rajnikanth will be receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2019. The announcement was made by the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Prakash Javadekar on Twitter.

He will be honoured with the award on the 3rd of May. The members of the jury were singers Asha Bhosle and Shankar Mahadevan, actors Mohanlal and Biswajeet and veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest honour in the Indian cinema fraternity.
The award was to be presented last year, 2019, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2018, Rajnikant’s former co-star and Bollywood superstar, Amitabh Bachchan won the award.
Rajnikant received praised from Twitteratis and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who congratulated him saying it is a matter of immense joy that Thalaiva has been conferred with the award. He added that Rajnikanth is known for his diverse roles and an endearing personality.
