Sri Lankan navy arrests ten Indian fishermen from Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM: November 16 (ANI) Ten Indian fishermen were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy on Thursday along with one boat from Nagapattinam after which they were taken to the Kankesanthurai Naval camp for interrogation. These fishermen belonged to Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram town and were held on charges of poaching fish near Neduntheevu, Assistant Director of Fisheries Department, Gangadharan said.

On November 14, over 1,600 fishermen were forced to return without their catch after Sri Lankan Navy personnel allegedly snapped the fishing nets of 25 boats near Katchatheevu. There have been several instances of such arrests in the past. Recently, Tamil Nadu chief minister K. Palanisamy had urged the Centre to take immediate steps to secure the release of 54 Indian fishermen apprehended by Sri Lanka. 140 fishing boats are also in Sri Lanka’s custody and this is fueling unrest among the fisher-folk.
