In light of Gaga’s star-making debut, let’s take a look at singers who have successfully transitioned to acting.

 

Jared Leto

Jared Leto is known for being the frontman of the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars, but has also earned fame as a character actor.

His breakout role was playing drug addict Harry Goldfarb in Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream. He prepared for the role by losing 25 pounds and living on the street for two weeks.

Another notable roles include Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club. He lost 30 pounds for the role and waxed his entire body from head to toe. He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2014 for his troubles.

In 2015, he took on the role of the Joker in Suicide Squad. In order to stay in character, he didn’t speak to the entire cast for the duration of the shoot. Instead, he sent them bizarre gifts such as a live black rat, bullets and a dead hog.

 

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake started off young as a child actor on the Disney Channel in shows such as The Mickey Mouse Club, but took a detour as his band *NSYNC took off.

After leaving the band, Timberlake established a successful career as a solo artist . In the mid-2000’s he re-entered the film world with roles in films such as Alpha Dog and Southland Tales.

He earned plaudits for his role as tech billionaire Sean Parker in The Social Network.

He has carved a niche as an actor in films such as Friends with Benefits, In Time and Inside Llewyn Davis.

 

David Bowie

David Bowie studied avant-garde theater and starred in a 1967 theatrical production of Pierrot in Turquoise. His breakout role was playing the lead Thomas Jerome Newton in the cult movie The Men Who Fell to Earth. He followed it up with roles in Just a Gigolo, Christiane F. and The Hunger.

Although he gained fame for his music career and his showman performances, he also gained note for his acting in Labyrinth, The Last Temptation of Christ and The Prestige.

 

Will Smith

Will Smith began his career as the MC of hip-hop duo Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince.

They earned acclaim for their music, which resulted in the Grammy Award win in 1988.

His acting career took off when he starred in the TV sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

On the big screen, his career took off with the action film Bad Boys, which led to lead roles in the Men in Black franchise, Wild, Wild West, iRobot and Hitch. He gained the note of critics and Best Actor Oscar nominations for his roles in Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness.

He has headlined big budget studio tentpole movies such as Suicide Squad, Hancock and I Am Legend with mixed critical and commercial success.

 

Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg started off as the frontman for the band Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.

He made his acting debut in the 1996 TV film The Substitute. His big screen debut was The Renaissance Man, but his breakout role was in The Basketball Diaries, which also starred Leonardo DiCaprio.

He continued his streak with critical and commercial hits such as Boogie Nights, Three Kings and The Italian Job.

His performance in The Departed got him nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2007.

Recently he has acted in films like Ted, The Fighter and Deepwater Horizon.
