Every year at least 2.1 million women are affected with breast cancer. It is the most frequent and common cancer among women and also causes the greatest number of cancer-related deaths among women.
In order to avoid breast cancer and survival from it, early detection of early signs and symptoms is very critical and of utmost importance.
Breast cancer is very common in Indian cities and second most common in the rural areas. Cases of breast cancer can be found in major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad etc.
Lack of awareness of breast cancer, lack of screening
Breast cancer is a non-existent entity for a majority of population till a near and dear one suffers from it. Healthcare is low on priority and even in major cities, screening is also an alien word for most of the people. So naturally, this results in most people presenting only when symptomatic, and on an average, most symptomatic cancers are stage 2B and beyond (significant numbers in stages 3 and 4). So the breast cancer patients do not tend to survive for a longer time, as their western counterparts.
Between 30-50% of all cancer cases are preventable. Prevention offers the most cost-effective long-term strategy for the control of cancer. People should be provided with the information and support they need to adopt healthy lifestyles.
Ways Breast Cancer could be avoided
There are number of ways breast cancer could be avoided like:
- Cutting down on tobacco
- Increasing the physically activity
- Good balanced diets
- Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution
Following some of this ways is the first step towards prevention and control of breast cancer. But even before that awareness about the disease is important.
