Sarkar beats Baahubali, garners highest opening day collection in TN

Vijay-starrer Sarkar lived up to its expectations as the opening day box office collection suggests. It earned Rs. 30 crores across Tamil Nadu, more than Baahubali, which earned Rs. 19 crore on the opening day. It also earned Rs.5.45 crores in Kerala, again becoming the highest opening day grosser in that state.

It also beat Rajnikanth-starrer, Kaala, to earn the highest opening day collection in Chennai with Rs. 2.41 crores as compared to Kaala’s Rs. 1.75 crores.

The success has not been restricted only to India though. It earned Rs. 70 crores globally too, earning Rs. 1.16 crores in Australia, Rs. 1.17 crore in UK and Rs. 2.37 crores in USA. The figures were surprising to say the least as the movie released on Tuesday, a weekday, as opposed to the usual practice of releasing it on Friday, which kicks off the weekend.

The slightly negative reviews did nothing to deter the spirits of the film-viewing audience, judging by the numbers, and neither did the plagiarism controversy. Director A.R. Murugadoss had been accused of stealing the script by writer, Varun Rajendran. The issue was settled after the makers agreed to a special credits scene for Rajendran.
