Sabarimala: UDF walks out of all-party meeting

UPDATE 3:30 pm: The all-party meeting convened by the chief minister to discuss the Sabarimala issue failed as the government stood firm on its stand. The opposition walked out boycotting the meeting accusing the government of “operating with arrogance”.

BJP state president Sreedharan Pillai said that the meeting was a complete waste of time and that it was scripted by the CM’s AKG centre.

The Congress led UDA  in Kerala staged the walk out and state leader of the party, Ramesh Chennithala said that government was not ready for any kind of compromise.

” This is a challenge to the state’s devotees”,Chennithala said.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan  addressed a press conference after the meeting.

“As a law-abiding state,  the government has no other option but to implement the existing Supreme Court ruling. We don’t intend to dilute the ruling, and we don’t want violence at Sabarimala either, ” Pinarayi said. ( Indian Express)

A crucial all-party meeting convened by Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan is underway in Thiruvananthapuram with Congress, CPM and BJP leaders in attendance.

According to Malayalam news channels, while the objective of the meeting is to reach a peaceful consensus regarding the entry of women into Sabarimala, political parties have said that they will stand their ground and not withdraw their respective demands.

While the BJP has reportedly said that they will not allow the religious beliefs of the people to be tampered with, the government has said that it is important to abide by the SC verdict.
