Court was addressing a plea by families who had lost their jobs in the pandemic

The Delhi High Court has asked the Delhi government to continue to provide ration under its Free Ration scheme without insisting on Ration cards, reported LiveLaw.

The court, while hearing a plea on behalf of seven families who lost work due to the COVID-19 induced lockdown, said that the government must continue to provide free ration to the petitioners and other similarly placed people, as long as the scheme is in place.

Santosh Kumar Tripathi, standing counsel for the Delhi government submitted to the court that free ration is already being provided in Delhi.

Replying to the plea, Ajay Digpaul, counsel for the Central government said that the government is keen on providing free ration to all and has extended the ‘Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana’ scheme till November 2021.

The Delhi government had started the Free Ration scheme outside the ambit of the Public Distribution System in March 2020 as part of relief measures because of the COVID-19 induced lockdown. However, its implementation was fraught with problems of shortages and scattered implementation.
