Opposition staged a walkout on Thursday in the Kerala Assembly demanding the resignation of Education Minister V Sivankutty. This comes in the backdrop of the Supreme Court rejecting Kerala government plea to withdraw the case against him and other CPI (M) ministers in the 2015 Kerala Assembly vandalism case.
The speaker dismissed the opposition’s notice to move an adjournment motion as chief minister Vijayan attempted to defend Sivankutty.
Opposition leader V D Satheesan said that the minister should resign and CM Vijayan should abide by the Supreme Court order rather than defending his minister. Satheesan accused the education minister of having behaved like a goon in the 2015 Assembly ruckus. The opposition also shouted slogans in the Assembly demanding Sivankutty’s resignation.
These demands have risen amidst the two-judge bench of the apex court comprising Justice Chandrachud and MR Shah in its judgement stating: “There is no immunity/privilege that protects legislators from criminal law.”
