UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer, called on Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday.
The President ensured her that the government was taking steps in accordance with the country’s constitution, briefing her about the political state in the country. He further said that all functions were being carried out within a democratic framework. Ms. Singer assured him that the UN would continue to assist Sri Lanka in the future. Sirisena was grateful for the peacekeeping organisation’s aid so far.

This comes after President Sirisena appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister on October 26, in a move that was criticized for being unconstitutional, while Ranil Wickremesinghe was still in office. Supporters of the ousted Prime Minister took to the streets in a bid to restore democracy in the politically turbulent island nation.
