M. J. Akbar, former journalist and junior minister for the Ministry of External Affairs resigned on Wednesday amidst multiple allegations of sexual harassment from women journalists.

In his statement, Akbar stated that he resigned as he had decided to “seek justice in the court of law in a personal capacity.” Akbar had filed a defamation case against Priya Ramani, the first woman to accuse him of sexual harassment.

Journalist Ghazala Wahab, one of first few women to come forward with their stories said, “”I think it’s the right decision and it would be better if he (Akbar) withdraws his case.”

Since he filed the defamation case, over 20 women have come forward with their own allegations of sexual harassment against him. Several journalist bodies such as the Indian Women’s Press Corps, South Asian Women in Media, Press Association and the Press Club of India had demanded an impartial probe into the charges against Akbar and said he must step down till the probe was concluded.
