I-League 2018-19: Quess East Bengal register second straight win against Shillong Lajong

Shillong: Quess East Bengal register a comfortable 3-1 victory over Shillong Lajong in their second I-league match of 2018-19 at the Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium in Shillong on Thursday. Joby Justin scored a brace in the first half and the third goal was scored by Bidyashagar Singh. Joby Justin won the man of the match award for his brilliant performance.

East Bengal Spanish coach Alejandro Menendez Garcia chose to begin with Brandon Vanlalremdika in midfield in place of Yomi Longwah, who had started in their opening encounter. On the other hand Lajong coach Alison Kharsyntiew began with an unchanged starting XI.

Lajong were on the attack from the outset but they were unlucky to not get the first goal. Captain Samuel Lalmuanpuia’s super strike off a free-kick from outside the box hit the East Bengal woodwork even as goalkeeper Rakshit Dagar was beaten.

Then against the run of play, it was East Bengal who took an early lead. From Lalrindika Ralte’s left-footed free-kick, Kerala frontman Joby Justin leapt up to connect with a perfectly placed and timed header, which beat Neithovilie Chalieu in the Lajong goal.

The goal spurred the Lajong boys even further and they put the East Bengal side under sustained pressure with a wave of attacks. Samuel Lyngdoh’s crisp strike from 25 yards out in the 23rd minute was eventually blocked by Dagar while captain Lalmuanpuia’s punch after Kamalpreet had given the ball away inside the East Bengal half, fail to find the mark. There was a spell when Lajong forced three corners in the space of 15 minutes but could not find the equaliser.

It was then in the 41st minute when Justin doubled East Bengal’s lead from a counter attack. After the break, Lajong carried on with their attacking forays with Samuel Lyngdoh being their most creative one and the most wasteful one in front of the goal. In between, East Bengal missed a couple of chances through Brandon and Laldanmawia Ralte.

In the 71st minute, Lajong got a goal back when the tireless left wing-back Rakesh Pradhan rose to connect with a perfect header off a Hnamte corner. Lajong’s joy was shortlived though as East Bengal struck again a couple of minutes later through substitute Bidyasagar Singh.Later on, Samuel Lyngdoh’s freakish shot from distance was tipped by Dagar and it touched the East Bengal crossbar to go out for a corner.

Alison even brought on Bonison to replace Hnamte in the 91st minute, but it was East Bengal’s day and they left the field with full three points. East Bengal will next face Chennai City.
