Four months ago, on July 13, 2018, 18-year-old athlete from Assam, Hima Das, scripted history and put India on the ‘tracks’ again after winning India’s first International gold medal in track events in the women’s 400m event at the 2018 International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World U20 Championships at Tampere, Finland.

Nicknamed the ‘Dhing Express’ by tabloids, the teenager proved that she truly is an athlete of wonders, after she was appointed as India’s Youth Ambassador by UNICEF yesterday, on the occasion of Children’s Day.

With her appointment, Das is the first Indian to have been conferred with this honour.

Hailing from Dhing, a small village which is about 30 km away from Nagaon in Assam, Das is the daughter of a farmer and a housewife and belongs to the Kaibarta community, an indigenous community in Assam. Das’ win at IAAF earlier this year put India back on the athletics map and made the world sit up and take notice of the abundance of emerging sports talents in the country. She was later conferred the Arjuna Award by Indian President, Ram Nath Kovind in September, 2018.
