If Rahul Dravid is known as The Wall, V.V.S. Laxman should be known as The Saviour. No other batsman has ever saved India in test cricket more than he did.

It has been almost six years since he retired, but, Laxman’s gritty knocks which helped India snatched victory from opponent’s mouth still remain fresh in everyone’s memories.

Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman has turned 45 today. On his birthday, here are the top five knocks of Laxman.

5. 103 against Srilanka at Colombo, August 2010.

While chasing a modest total of 257, India were 52 for 3 wickets down when Laxman came into strike.

He and Sachin Tendulkar tried to restore the innings before the later got out. Laxman then continued to bat till India went past the required total for victory.

It was not only a savior of an Innings but also a masterclass of how to play spin as Srilankan spinners were wreaking havoc in that series.

4. 73 against Australia in Mohali, October 2010.

In the first test of the 2-Test series against Australia on October 2010, V.V.S Laxman played one of the most crucial innings of his life.

Chasing the target of 216, India were 8 down for 122. That is when Laxman stitched a partnership of 81 runs with Ishant Sharma.

Overcoming his back injury and with the help of a runner, Laxman snatched victory from the grasp of Australia in Mohali that day.

3. 96 against South Africa at Durban, December 2010.

In the tricky wicket of Durban both the sides were struggling. batting first, India scored 205, while South Africa were bundled out for 131 in their first innings.

India came to bat in the next innings with a lead of 74 runs. But they were struggling at 56 for 4 when Laxman came into bat.

He produced yet another masterclass. But, this time it was to show how to bat against quality swing bowling. His gritty 96 helped India post a target of 303 that South Africa couldn’t score in their second innings.

2. 148 against Australia at Adelaide, December 12-16, 2003.

In the 2nd test of 2003-04 test series against Australia, V.V.S. Laxman and Rahul Dravid brought back the memory of 2001. At 85 for 4 both the men started the restoration process

All the limelights were taken Dravid’s doublce century, but, Laxman’s innings of 148 still remains one of best knocks. It was a display of flawless defence against the fiery pace attack of Australia.

Dravid and Laxman had helped India achieve a victory that is still well and alive in everyone’s memory.

1. 281 against Australia at Kolkata, March 2001.

In what is one the most memorable test knocks that have ever been played, Laxman had redefined the term epic with his tireless batting at the Eden Gardens against the Aussies.

After being bowled out for 171 and giving Australia a lead of 274 runs, India were enforced a follow-on. India were 232 for 4 in their lookout to save the test match.

That is when Laxman played his greatest knock of 281 and put on mammoth partnership of 374 runs with Rahul Dravid, once again.

The knock, that was an exhibition of straight-bat strokes and subtle wrist-play, gave India one of the most famous test victories in modern era.
