Two terrorists, which are yet to be identified, were gunned down in an exchange of fire with security forces in Wanbal area of Nowgam on the outskirts of Srinagar on Wednesday, police said. Two soldiers were also killed during the security operation.
The Army had launched a cordon and search operation in the city on information that some militants had sneaked in.
The militants opened fire on the security forces, triggering a gun battle in which the two ultras were killed.

A police official said locals have been told not to go near the operation site till the area is santiised.
“An area was cordoned off around 2 a.m. after specific inputs about the presence of militants at Soothu Kothair area on the city outskirts,” said the police.
Locals said the area was rattled with loud blasts and firing was on when this report was filed. They clashed against the security forces and stone pelting ensued.

All educational institutions, including colleges and higher secondary schools, were closed in Srinagar district as precautionary measure. Internet service has also been snapped. The Jammu and Kashmir police have informed that no collateral damage took place during the encounter.
The security forces also recovered incriminating materials, including arms and ammunition, from the site of the encounter.

An eye witness said that the militants raised pro-freedom and pro-Pakistan slogans during the funeral which is being held in an open field, just few hundred metres on Srinagar-Jammu highway. Sofi was killed along with an associate Asif Ahmad Shergujri in an overnight gunfight with the government forces in Nowgam area on the outskirts of Srinagar.
